Keg Sentry is a wired system. Wireless networks pose a significant security risk and can encounter numerous physical and electrical interference issues. The cables used to connect Keg Sentry's modules are standard Ethernet and RJ11 telephone cables. These cables are chosen because they are commonly used in bars and restaurants, so no special installation skills are required.

Multiple eight-tap consoles will be installed in bars with more than eight taps, sharing a single power supply daisy-chained to each console.

The Flow-Sensor Aggregator is a small module that is installed in a cooler and connects to an Eight-Tap Monitor Console using a standard Ethernet cable.  Eight flow sensors are then connected to the Aggregator using a standard RJ11 telephone wire.

Keg Sentry uses highly accurate and repeatable Digmesa Flow-Sensors as a source for flow-rate data. A Flow-Sensor is installed in the beer line and sends digital pulses to its Monitor Module proportional to the amount of beer flowing from its keg.  For example, 114 pulses of a US pint of beer.

Keg Sentry features a reliable 12-Volt DC Battery Supply and Charger that can operate the system for over 20 hours, or longer depending on battery capacity, during a power outage. The batteries generally last two to three years, are easy to find, and can be replaced without shutting down the system.

Keg Sentry Basic Design

Keg Sentry was designed based on an engineering principle called "No Single Point of Failure," meaning that any one Monitor Module failure will only affect its tap.  To restore operation, simply replace the failed module with a spare.

Keg Sentry's design clearly differs from software-based systems that depend on servers, software, and Internet connections, as failures in these areas can disable the entire system until the problem is fixed.  Resolving such issues often takes hours and involves multiple help desk interactions.
